EXTERNAL VALUES ALSO MATTER.

Exterior components.

Plastic opens up a wide range of possibilities, because it gives our designers substantially more creative freedom than conventional materials such as steel or aluminium. The material is about 50 percent lighter than steel, resistant to minor damage and does not corrode. Through decades of experience, our plastics specialists at BMW Group Plant Landshut have acquired unique expertise in manufacturing and applying paint to large-scale plastic components: In 2022, they produced around 273,000 painted plastic exterior components in 39 standard and 200 individual colours. Around 1,200 exterior components leave the Landshut plant every workday for the vehicle plants.

Carbon fibre components.

Carbon is unlike any conventional material. The composite offers a unique combination of numerous positive qualities: It is light, extremely resilient and corrosion-resistant.
Plant Landshut has been the BMW Group’s competence centre for carbon production since the Landshut Innovation and Technology Centre (LITZ) opened. After more than 20 years of intensive material and process development – including production of carbon roofs for BMW M models, our specialists have acquired unique expertise in large-scale carbon-specific manufacturing processes. This is where body components for BMW i are manufactured, for instance.
